Known to Buffalo and Western New York natives as a beloved drink, the loganberry flavor originated from an actual berry!
The loganberry is a mix between a raspberry and blackberry. The species was named Rubus loganobaccus after being bred in California in the 1880’s. Eventually it made it’s way across the country to New York State, and even Canada!
Why is Loganberry a Buffalo thing?
The loganberry flavor was introduced at the Crystal Beach Amusement Park in Ontario, Canada. This was the place to be, with people from Buffalo crossing the border with their families every summer. The park closed down in 1989, but the loganberry flavor was remembered fondly.
The Davis Family, originally from Buffalo, created a secret recipe that became the beloved loganberry drink. They opened a restaurant, PJ’s BAR-B-Q, when they moved to Saratoga Springs. Their family recipe was only sold at their restaurant for a time, before they bottled it once they realized how much everyone loved their hometown flavors. In 1998, Crystal Beach Loganberry was sold throughout Western New York.
After that, loganberry quickly became known as the drink from Buffalo.
Loganberry in many forms
Loganberry has since evolved into many different products. Not only a beloved drink, the loganberry flavor can enhance a sweet treat or mixed drink! Loganberry dessert syrup can be added to your favorite ice cream, or snow cones and slushies can be made from the 5+1 syrup.
